Dutch iris hybrids grow from bulbs that can be planted in fall or spring and are often grown as annuals. These graceful and elegant flowers bloom atop grass-like foliage. They are easy to grow, and if zone appropriate, are great for naturalizing. They are often used as cut flowers. Sapphire Beauty (Iris hollandica) is the classic purple Dutch Iris, with a striking yellow flame in the falls. Choose a site that has reasonably fertile soil and plenty of moisture that won’t dry out in summer. Good drainage and a sheltered location will help them survive the winter. Plant about 15 bulbs per square foot. Zone 5 gardeners should add a 2 in. layer of mulch in fall. Best planted in large numbers.
